Q&A with cofounder Abbey
- Jane: So, how did you get started in the eyelash business?
- Abbey: Megan and I first started wearing lashes a few years ago after scrutinizing an Elle magazine cover and wondering what it was that made this pretty girl’s face so very polished and perfect. She was wearing minimal makeup but just looked fantastic. All of a sudden it hit us: false lashes! From that moment on, we wore false lashes everywhere. Lashes are so easy to pack, easy to apply, easy to throw on for lunch or date night, etc. And the results simply can’t be achieved with any other product.
- Jane: Why are Winks different from other faux lashes?
- Abbey: Megan and I know lashes. We’ve worn every brand out there, but we were never fully satisfied. We wanted very naturalistic styles that no one would suspect were falsies but that gave an amazing wow factor. A subtle and classic collection. We wanted a clean adhesive that contained certified-organic botanicals, the very best latex grade available, no formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals. We wanted the adheisve to be PETA friendly, dermatologist tested, and made in the U.S. No other lash adhesive can say that! Lastly, we wanted a package that was pretty, mobile, and refillable, so we designed the compacts. And as far as Georgie goes, we wanted to create a clean, classic, ‘old-Hollywood-luxury meets new-eco-generation’ brand that reflected our taste and so many of our friends’ tastes!
- Jane: What is the best application tip you can give to someone who is new to wearing falsies?
- Abbey: Disregard all tips and just spend a little time figuring out what works best for you! I promise if you spend just one hour of your life practicing application, it’s a pretty easy skill to master and one that will stay with you forever. We all learn how to pluck, shave, style hair, apply all kinds of makeup products …. A great false lash is just the most transformative product, so spend an hour playing with a pair of Winks and some q-tips and the back end of an eye liner brush. I promise you will become proficient!
- Jane: Which is your favorite style to wear and why?
- Abbey: I go through phases. Sometimes I wear Cherie every day for two weeks, and then I will get on an Avant-Gardiste or Starlette kick. I like having the option of three very different styles, depending on what I’m wearing, where I’m going, and who I want to be that day! Everyone feels like an ingenue some days, a little avant-garde sometimes, and definitely like a starlet some nights!
- Jane: What can we expect in the future from Winks?
- Abbey: Three additional classic, naturalistic styles that are totally different from the three current styles! A new version of our adhesive that is stronger and dries quicker that comes in both clear and black. And an amazing applicator tool that you will love!
